Anne locked up in Shanghai 20 June 2009

So tired tonight!!!!!

It is actually very sticky and humid - too cold with the air-con on and too hot with it off.  In typical Asian fashion the unit is of a size suited to a room many times larger than this one.  This afternoon there was the mother of all thunderstorms so I instantly had to black out my room .   I am terrified of thunder, so that was a very unpleasant part of the day for me.  it is now pouring rain.  Might clear the air a little, though unlikely at this time of year.

So nice to have nice flowers in the room - they are bright and smell lovely - afraid the roses which remained in Trevor's room have become the exact opposite and we had to fling them tonight.  Being a man he had been wondering all day what the terrible smell was - the water was fetid!

I am furious with the journalist from The Age who called to interview me yesterday and then promptly put other words in my mouth.  The piece in today's Age which was attributed to me was not how I put things at all, Visnja was standing beside me as I spoke to him and she was as horrified as I was that it all came out so differently.  He gave me words I do not use and somehow made me sound very damning and bitter and I was so careful not to do so.

Now I am terrified what the Herald Sun will say tomorrow, because there is a piece in there as well.

I had a little scare today when the temperature checkers came round, when I noticed on their clipboard = "Room 3268.... 37.4"   That is over the magic 37 degrees and I was so worried it meant someone in here would be carted off for testing.  They were on a different floor so probably no need to worry.

The word on the street is that we are leaving here tomorrow "maybe five or six o'clock" on a bus back to the airport - not us.  We are being collected in a Ritz Carlton car when we say the word. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if we end up staying here till Monday, so I am not packing the case just yet.

We have a singing inmate - if that is what you call it.  He has been starting up in the afternoons - so reminds me of the prison movies you see, and definitely a touch of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.  Much around this place does.

Lots of explosions all day today, from outside.  Appear to be funerals I think and they  have been letting off dozens of crackers in the gardens next door.  Some of them are definitely more than penny bungers though and the noise is really disquieting to tortured souls like us.

Just had a nice dinner - courtesy of RC - ciabatta BLTs - massive ones, chips, chocolate, chardonnay, some nice Penfolds red, and newspapers.  Could not possibly ask for more.  e went round to Trevor's room to eat it, and passed some other inmates lurking in their doorways along the way, they asked us if we were going out!!  Of course we said yes, so the tom-toms will be going now.

And so to bed in the hope I will be somewhere else this time tomorrow.

So very grateful for all the emails and phone calls.  On reflection, my days have really been very full and those are mostly the reason.

Without a doubt my laptop has saved the day for me, and until a couple of months ago, I never travelled with one.  I will never again travel without one.

It has been my link to the world, and my means of work, so this week has been far from wasted.

Am missing Rotary President's Night tonight and hoping it goes well - about now our famous skit which lampoons the outgoing President, will be in full swing - hate missing that.

Given I am the incoming President, I imagine the script for mine in a year's time is written already!!!  Stephanie has gone with Barry in my place.
